Virgin Galactic is planning to launch flights to space from the UAE, the company's president has revealed.

The company hopes to start flights into space from a spaceport it plans to build in the UAE within two years of the service taking off from its worldwide operating base in New Mexico, Will Whitehorn, president of Virgin Galactic said.

In 2005, Virgin Galactic had reached an agreement with authorities in New Mexico to build a $200 million spaceport in the south of the state. A second spaceport is planned in Sweden to give the operation a European base.

The Virgin Galactic mothership, WhiteKnightTwo, is under development with scale models expected to take the sky in late July. The jet-powered aircraft is designed to fly the crew and passengers to 50,000 feet before releasing the SpaceShipTwo orbiter.

Virgin employees sit in the cabin of a prototype Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo. The ship will carry six passengers and two pilots, offering a total flight time of 2 hours.

It has not set a deadline for the launch of the space flights, but plans to start commercial flights around a year after the unveiling of prototypes and test flights has been completed.

Virgin founder Richard Branson (pictured) will be the first passenger to be flown to space in the first commercial flight, along with the designer of the Virgin Galactic spacecraft SpaceShipTwo, Burt Rutan who is designing the spaceship.

The key driver for the Internet protocol (IP)-based network is a common application and service environment across multiple types of net-works. In fact, the IP has created an open platform for innovative, flexible, and fast service creation, has enabled existing services to be supported, and has provided IP-based mobility for all types of wired and wireless transport in both the access network and the core network.

The target setting is to (1) create a world class all-IP system with rapid time-to-market and future-proof design, (2) enable flexibility for providing new, revolutionary services while ensuring smooth network evolution and service continuity, (3) provide access independent design for globally seam-less services, and (4) enable growth of revenue-generating systems now by leveraging the newly emerged wireless data market.

1.2 Wireless IP

The basic concept of wireless IP is shown in Figure 1.2. It is basically a pow-erful confluence of the network interworking layer and the tetherless con-nectivity with or without mobility in a heterogeneous networking environment with the promise of seamless connectivity across network sub-domains. Combining the best of both wireless and IP technologies has brought us into the era of wireless IP. Wireless IP will enable cost-effective, high-quality IP-based wireless multimedia services, including voice over IP, in large volumes [1–8].

In most developed markets the volume of data traffic has already sur-passed that of voice traffic, and this trend will only continue to accelerate.

As much as I love my iPhone, I can’t stand getting fingerprints all over the phone’s beautiful glossy screen. So I was jazzed when the guys over at Norway’s Elliptic Labs let me know about their new touchless user interface technology.

The system is capable of detecting movements in 3-dimensions without ever having to put your fingers on the screen.

Their patented touchless interface doesn’t require that you wear any special sensors on your hand either. You just point at the screen (from as far as 5 feet away), and you can manipulate objects in 3D.

Elliptic says the technology is compact enough that it could eventually be embedded into mobile devices. Representatives of the company will be on hand at the upcoming GDC show in San Francisco this February to show off their system in person.

Those digging the specs on Lenovo's Thinkpad T60p laptop but not so down with the basic black look now have another option besides the DIY route at their disposal, with ColorWare announcing that its added the laptop to its multi-colored lineup. The laptop itself remains the same as before, of course, and configurable to some extent, with a 15.4-inch widescreen display and 2GHz Core 2 Duo processor standard, along with up to 2GB of RAM and 160GB of hard drive space. Things depart from the Thinkpad mold when you hit the color selection screen, however, with no less than 28 colors to choose from, including such stylish options as Caution Yellow (seen above) and Cotton Candy Pink. Going for the base model in your choice of color will set you back $2,950 with units shipping in 2-3 weeks, although those that have already sprung for a T60 aren't entirely out of luck, with ColorWare saying they'll soon also be offering an option for you to send in your laptop for a bit of sprucing up.
